The tool you'll need for this is something to make sure that your tailgate is supported as well as a T45 socket with a ratchet.

Open up your tailgate. Check your tailgate every once in a while. A lot of times, what happens is the rubber casing frays and then the steel cable inside will fray as well and there'll be little tiny sharp things that can poke you when you're loading and unloading your tailgate. Replace them, actually just make sure your tailgate is supported, start up here, and pry it with a screwdriver, try with my hand, just pry this back so that this tailgate comes off. Like I said, make sure that your tailgate is supported so it doesn't drop down. There’s a T45 Torx screw here and remove that.

To put it back together, the large tab goes in the slot in the tailgate. Put it in and tighten it up. You should be able to tighten it up good and firm and then the tailgate should still spin freely and then at this end, lift the tailgate up a little bit, put it on, and lock it in place. Make sure that the cable goes down the first few times so it gets kind of a memory fold into it and shut your tailgate.
